Beginning the school year...

Liz Uebelhoer

I am not currently teaching, but I would think the first week of school would be challenging. For those teaching do you find establishing a routine and getting to know the kids is the most important? Do you dive right into content the first week or review mostly what was taught the previous year? Any advice for when I am teaching would be great!

Hi Liz,
I always try to establish my class routines/class expectations during the first week of school. I usually don't spend any time reviewing standards from the previous year. The English teachers on my team sit down and look at the curriculum map and work out a plan to cover all necessary material that is required for the nine week period. I am working with the same team I was on last year and it is great because we had no start-up time with each other. We get right down to work and collaborate effectively with one another. It's great to work with team members who embrace the special education students and teacher!

It is great to hear that team members are working together to meet the goals of the students. I hope to be on a great team once I begin teaching!
