Behavior/Motivation Stategies

Behavior issues are not exclusive to the Glad Program (at risk students). Second/third week of school and some of my Glad students are struggling with self-control in the classroom. They are voicing their disappointment with school - not because of the teachers, but because of their lack of motivation and low self esteem. I have used the reward system, positive reinforcement, and other incentives. Do you have any suggestions?

I would like to share some of the strategies that i used with my BSP students:
Ask them to list areas of challenges, specific behaviorss that that prevent him/her to focus in class and do well. Together, you establish a goal which is measurable, and a tool to monitor it. (In the BSP we use the point sheet, and i can send you mine, if you would like to see it).
Meet with the student at the end of the day, and discuss how he/she did.

Ask them to come with something (objet, phrase, etc) that they can carry with them, and will symbolize whatever they are trying to achieve.

keep in mind that there is no all size fits all strategy, it is an ongoing process that you have to maintain through a clear routine.

The most important step is AWARENESS. so long as they are aware of their problems and able to identify the root cause of it, there is HOPE. Keep on working working them, motivate, picture a positive outcome.

Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks.

Yes, it helps a lot. The strategy you suggested allows the student to become aware of his/her behavior that is affecting the atmosphere of the classroom - overall achievement in school. I Would say it is behavior modification strategy which enlist the student's participation in solving the problem.
Thank you, Elaine

I hope to find ways to address the behaviors of my 2 students with ADHD (one on meds, the other not). They are my biggest struggle and stressor in my classroom. Not only do they keep themselves from learning, their behavior is totally distracting to other kids in the too.
